Overview
StudyPorch offers topic based Math courses that enable children to develop a strong foundation in each major topic. Topic based courses are suitable for children across multiple grades based on their knowledge level for that topic. Each course has 8 to 16 classes depending on the level and complexity of the topic. After the completion of a course children can start another course on a different topic or select an advanced course on the same topic where available. This way the children can advance at their own pace based on their performance in a course and further interest in the topics in that course.
We recommend that all students in grades 5 through 7 start with Foundation courses in Arithmetic that cover the core concepts of Decimals, Fractions, Ratios, and Percents. For students in grades 7 through 9, we recommend starting with
Foundation
courses in Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry. Students should consider other courses based on their interest level and learning needs.
Web Class Room
Once signed up, each student logs in to their scheduled virtual class room. Teachers and students share a whiteboard and communicate through a telephone conference session. Other tools such as application/screen sharing, private chat sessions are used as applicable.
A Typical Class
A typical class will be 1 hour long broken down into 3 sessions of 10, 25 & 25 minutes. First 10 minutes is spent on reviewing the last session’s work and answering any questions. The next 25 minutes is spent on explaining a concept through simple examples and providing tips on improving speed and accuracy. The last 25 minutes is used for learning to solve more difficult problems. At the end of each class students are given a homework assignment that includes some challenging problems. Students should submit their completed assignment before their next class for assessment and feedback.
